Charleroi
Vase planted by Hugo, Leo, Muriel & Valery, August 15, 2013

Charleroi is at the center of a vast coal field, now completely abandoned, and formerly called ‘Black Country’.   The peace vase is buried at ‘Terril du Martinet’ (named after the little bird who lives in these woods).     A  ‘terril’ is a hill formed by the accumulation of mine tailings, by-products of mining.  Today trees and flowers grow on this black earth; rare birds, frogs and insects live there and the area is protected.

Valéry dug a hole in the black earth and his two sons, Hugo and Leo, then placed the vase.
