Near Minamata Bay, Myoujin-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyuushu Island
Vase planted January 2011

The vase was placed near Minamata Bay where the Minamata disease occurred .   The Minamata disease is  notorious, caused by heavy methyl mercury poisoning.   From 1932 to 1968, the Chisso Corporation’s chemical factory released this poisonous toxic material as part its industrial wastewater; it is one of the worst environmental disasters in Japan’s history.  The mercury contaminated Minamata Bay as well as the  Shiranui Sea.  People and the animals who ate fish from this bay have died or are still suffering from mercury poisoning.
